According to MacLean’s Hospital, studies have debunked that adolescents can be kept safe if they learn to drink alcohol under adult supervision. This includes in Europe, where rates of adolescent binge drinking and alcohol misuse are higher than in the US. Whether supervised or not, teenage alcohol use inhibits the production of GABA, which is associated with impulse control, and better decision-making. Adolescent alcohol use also inhibits verbal learning between binge drinking episodes. If you want to help your adolescents regarding alcohol, help them mature into responsible decision-making instead through behaviors that help with growing GABA production in the brain. This includes activities like aerobic exercise and meditation. Also, try facilitating new experiences since adolescent risk-taking is associated with “leaving the nest” preparation. As a parent, you may want to try and model some of these things yourself. #buildingbrightbrains

Join the Medway Project 351 ambassadors and alumni at the Medway Public Library on Saturday, September 9, in honor of the tragic events of 9/11. Join us in the Library's Cole Room for a read-aloud & meet and greet with first responders from 10:30 am-12:30 pm. Outside, the kids will have a "Touch a Truck"! This is a family-friendly event. We hope to see you there!!!

What is the #buildingbrightbrains campaign about? It is a series of initiatives to share messages with parents and adolescents that brains continue to develop until age 25, and choices made during youth can change the brain's structure for better or worse. Like this post or follow SUP Medway as we continue to empower both teens and their parents with tips on what "boosts" the brain and facts on what to avoid to not "bust" brain development. Children need healthy meals to learn. Accordingly, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is providing complimentary breakfast and lunch for all students. In addition, the Medway Public Schools offer reduced fees (PK tuition, athletic fees, trip fees) for qualifying families. ACTION REQUIRED: Annual Student Information Update To prioritize safety and efficiency, we require all parents and students to complete a yearly review and sign off on the information, policies, and procedures. To streamline this process and make it convenient for everyone, we have integrated this review into our user-friendly Parent Portal system, which we refer to as "Online Registration" or "The Yearly Information Update" in our communications. All families must complete this review, update any information that may have changed since last year, and sign off on required policies and procedures by September 7, 2023. Families with 5th and 9th-grade students should know that this process must be completed before a school-issued Chromebook will be deployed to their child. We will be giving away backpacks on Tuesday, 8/22 & Wednesday, 8/23 at 1:00 pm at the Medway Public Library, 26 High St as part of the FREE summer lunch & fun program! Bags will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis in the Makerspace, and will be available while supplies last. Supplies are courtesy of Medway Public Schools and the Hockmock Area YMCA.
